Inspired by a plant found in the wild, Madder Red is used to designate a red paint made from the pigment madder lake, a traditional lake pigment extracted from the common madder plant Rubia tinctorum. Madder root has been cultivated as a dye since antiquity in Central Asia, South Asia, and Egypt, where it was grown as early as 1500 BC, found in the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun and also found in the ancient ruins of Pompeii. Charcoal, while reminiscent of the cubes used to start fires and accompany Memorial Day barbecues, actually has roots dating back to at least the 1500s when the dye was extracted from logwood or blackwood, a tree that comes from Central America.
